Calling All ASL Translators: Join Us on Fossil Hunts!

At Maryland Fossil Finders, our mission is to make fossil hunting accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of background or ability. To continue building an inclusive community, we’re looking for passionate volunteers who are skilled in American Sign Language (ASL) to join us on our fossil hunting adventures.

Why We Need ASL Translators

Fossil hunting is a hands-on, educational experience that can be incredibly rewarding, but for our deaf and hard-of-hearing participants, clear communication is key to fully enjoying the event. By having ASL translators on hand, we can ensure that everyone, including those who communicate primarily through sign language, can engage, learn, and connect with others during our hunts.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking volunteer ASL translators who are:

• Passionate About Fossil Hunting: No prior fossil hunting experience is required—just a willingness to join in on the fun and learn along the way.
• Skilled in ASL: Proficiency in American Sign Language is essential to effectively communicate with our deaf participants.
• Available for Events: We need volunteers who can attend events as needed when we have deaf participants signed up. While we can’t guarantee that we’ll need you at every event, we want to have a roster of reliable translators ready to assist when the need arises.
• Committed to Inclusivity: We value creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, and we’re looking for volunteers who share that commitment.
