Finding Joy and Hope in the Fossil Community

In challenging times, how do we find bits of joy and hope?

For Felicia, it’s the joy of discovering and teaching about fossils while ensuring that fossil hunting remains ethical and accessible. For me, joining Maryland Fossil Finders as the Director of Outreach and Accessibility has been a meaningful experience—both as a way to advocate for inclusive fossil hunting and as a full-circle moment from my childhood.

One of my earliest memories is a school field trip to a quarry, where I uncovered fossilized plants and geodes. That discovery sparked excitement that stayed with me, even as life led me down other paths. Now, being part of this organization brings that joy back, and I look forward to helping make fossil hunting welcoming to all—no matter their background, ability, or identity.
