Join Our Board: We’re Looking for a Treasurer!

At Maryland Fossil Finders, we’re dedicated to making fossil hunting more accessible, inclusive, and educational for all Marylanders. Our mission is growing, and we’re looking for a key person to help steer our financial future—our next Treasurer.

As we expand our programs and prepare for nonprofit status, we’re seeking an experienced Treasurer to join our Board of Directors. This individual will play a crucial role in ensuring the financial health of our organization, guiding us in making strategic financial decisions that align with our mission.

What Does the Treasurer Do?

Our Treasurer will have an essential role in the management of our finances. Here’s a quick look at the responsibilities:

Financial Oversight

The Treasurer will oversee the organization’s financial health, ensuring that we remain on track with our funding goals and that all resources are appropriately managed. Working closely with our Executive Director, the Treasurer will help develop the annual budget and monitor all financial activity.

Record-Keeping and Reporting

Accuracy in financial record-keeping is key. The Treasurer will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing regular financial reports for the Board, and ensuring the organization’s compliance with all financial regulations.

Fundraising & Financial Planning

As we grow, we’ll need strategic financial planning to support our efforts. The Treasurer will work with the Board to ensure that our funding aligns with our mission, helping us allocate resources to the most impactful programs. They will also assist in our fundraising efforts by providing financial guidance and strategy.

Legal Compliance and Governance

The Treasurer will ensure that Maryland Fossil Finders complies with all legal and tax requirements. This includes helping prepare tax filings and ensuring that financial policies and practices are in line with nonprofit standards.

What’s the Time Commitment?

We know that time is valuable, which is why we’ve structured our Treasurer position to be flexible:

  • Board Meetings: Four meetings a year, approximately 1-2 hours each, to discuss and oversee the financial health of the organization.
  • Additional Duties: The Treasurer will stay in touch with the Executive Director and the Board between meetings as needed, reviewing reports and providing financial advice.

What Skills and Experience Are We Looking For?

We are seeking someone with experience in financial management, ideally with a background in nonprofit accounting and an understanding of the financial regulations nonprofits must follow. Here are a few of the qualifications we’re hoping for:

  • Proven experience in financial management or accounting
  • Knowledge of nonprofit tax law and financial reporting
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Passion for our mission of making fossil hunting accessible and educational
  • Ability to work collaboratively with our Board and staff

If you’re someone who enjoys working behind the scenes to ensure an organization’s success and you’re passionate about supporting education, conservation, and community engagement, we would love to hear from you.

Why Join the Board?

Being on our Board is a unique opportunity to contribute to an organization that’s making a real difference in the community. As a Treasurer, you’ll not only play an essential role in our growth and sustainability but also get to be a part of the excitement of fossil hunting and environmental education. You’ll have a direct impact on our ability to bring people together, educate Marylanders about fossil history, and advocate for ethical and accessible fossil hunting practices.
