At Maryland Fossil Finders, we offer fun, hands-on fossil hunting adventures at Calvert Cliffs and along the Potomac River. Whether you’re exploring the cliffs by the Chesapeake Bay or searching the riverbanks of the Potomac, our goal is to help you connect with nature and uncover hidden treasures. Here’s what you can expect on our trips, designed especially for beginners.

Fossil Hunting Locations

Calvert Cliffs: Located along the Chesapeake Bay, this area is famous for its fossils from millions of years ago. You might find ancient shark teeth, shells, or even parts of prehistoric mammals.

Potomac River: Here, you’ll search for fossils that are even older, including remains of early marine life and possibly ancient crocodiles.

What We Do

• Beachcombing and Surface Hunting: We’ll walk along the beach and riverbanks, looking for fossils naturally exposed by erosion. Fossils often collect in shell beds or wash up in the surf, making them easy to spot and pick up.
• Hand Collecting: Using just your hands or a simple scoop, you’ll gather fossils right from the surface or water’s edge. No digging into the cliffs is allowed—this keeps everyone safe!
• Enjoying Nature: As you hunt, you’ll likely see local wildlife and plants, making the experience even more enjoyable. From seabirds to coastal plants, there’s so much to take in.
• Walk… A Lot: For beginners, we recommend sticking to surface collecting rather than sifting. Walking along the surf and searching for exposed fossils is easier and more effective for those just starting out.

Tips for a Successful Fossil Hunt

• What to Wear: Wear sturdy shoes or boots and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, and maybe even a small bucket or ziplock bag for your finds.
• Safety First: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially near cliffs and water. Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun.
• Weather Readiness: Be prepared for changes in weather. We hunt rain or shine, but it’s always good to know how to handle different conditions. Experienced hunters know to avoid extreme weather.
